Olive Oil for Dogs: How Much Is Safe, and What Counts Against It

Quick answer

Most healthy dogs can have a little plain olive oil, but it is pure fat with about 119 calories per tablespoon. Count it with treats, which should stay under 10% of daily calories. Skip it for dogs with a pancreatitis history unless your vet agrees. Olive oil is not fish oil, so it does not supply the omega-3s with joint evidence.

The short answer

Can dogs have olive oil?

Yes, most healthy dogs can eat a small amount of plain olive oil. It is not toxic to dogs. The real issue is that it is almost pure fat, and fat adds up fast.

Plain means plain. Skip flavored oils with garlic or onion, which are unsafe for dogs, and skip food that was fried or heavily oiled. Those add far more fat than a measured splash.

There is no official olive oil dose for dogs. Count the calories, watch the fat and ask your vet.

Nutrition

What is in olive oil, nutritionally?

Olive oil is fat and little else: 884 calories per 100 g, with 73 g of monounsaturated fat (USDA, Olive oil). Most of that, 71.3 g, is oleic acid, an omega-9 fat. It has no protein, no carbohydrate and no fiber.

Olive oil calories by amount. Based on USDA data: 884 kcal per 100 g and about 0.91 g per mL (USDA, Olive oil). Amounts are for scale, not doses.

The Mighty K9 label lists 16.2 kcal per 2 mL, which matches pure olive oil. That tells you the serving is essentially oil, as the olive oil ingredient page explains.

Slide to your dog's weight to see the daily total and the 10% treat budget.

Treats and extras, oil included, should make up no more than 10% of daily calories (WSAVA, Treats). WSAVA puts that at about 47 kcal a day for a 10 kg (22 lb) dog, 79 kcal for 20 kg and 108 kcal for 30 kg.

At about 119 kcal, one tablespoon is more than twice the whole treat budget of a 22 lb dog. That is why a free pour from the kitchen bottle is a bad idea. Our serving size by weight page shows the numbers for each size band.

Fat and pancreatitis

Can olive oil cause pancreatitis in dogs?

A large dose of any fat can. The American Kennel Club calls a high-fat diet a major cause of pancreatitis, and says one big helping of fatty food can set off an attack or a relapse (AKC, Pancreatitis).

The Merck Veterinary Manual lists eating something unusual as a common risk factor and notes that Miniature Schnauzers are overrepresented (Merck Vet Manual, Pancreatitis). Signs include vomiting, belly pain and diarrhea. A low-fat diet is a key part of treatment, so dogs who have had pancreatitis are often kept on one for life.

Ask first if your dog has had pancreatitis

Any added oil, including a supplement, needs your vet's okay if your dog has had pancreatitis or eats a low-fat diet. Stop and call your vet if vomiting or belly pain follows a new food.

Milder reactions are covered on our side effects page.

Which is better for dogs, olive oil or fish oil?

On joints, the evidence sits with fish oil, not olive oil. They are different fats. A 2022 review of dog and cat trials found that omega-3 products eased arthritis pain (Barbeau-Gregoire 2022, meta-analysis). Olive oil supplies omega-9, not the EPA and DHA omega-3s in fish oil.

Merck notes EPA at 50-100 mg per kg a day improved mobility in dogs with arthritis (Merck Vet Manual, Osteoarthritis). Ask your vet for the right product and amount, since fish oils vary a lot in EPA content.

Our product

How does a 2 mL serving of Mighty K9 compare?

A 2 mL serving of Mighty K9, the product this site sells, is a small, fixed amount of olive oil: about 1.8 g and 16.2 calories. That is less than half a teaspoon, and about a seventh of a tablespoon.

For a 50 lb dog, one serving uses well under 2% of daily calories. For a 10 lb dog, it is about 5% of the day, or roughly half the treat budget. Trim a treat to make room.

The rest is 1.6 mg of ESS60 (C60) and bacon flavor. C60 has no published dog trials, and the oil is not an omega-3. The label gives no weight-based amount, so ask your vet about small dogs.

Practical tips

How do I add olive oil to my dog's food safely?

Measure it, count it and watch your dog. The same habits apply to oil supplements.

  • Measure with a dropper or measuring spoon. Never free pour.
  • Count the calories against the 10% treat budget, and trim other extras.
  • Watch the stool for a few days. Loose stools mean too much fat for your dog.
  • Store oil closed, in the dark and away from heat; light is the main threat to olive oil (IOC, Olive oil storage).
  • Tell your vet about every food topper and supplement (Tufts Petfoodology, Sensible use).

Bottom line

Can dogs have olive oil every day?

A small, measured amount every day is fine for most healthy dogs, as long as you count the calories. The daily habit matters less than the size of the pour.

Extra calories work against sore joints in a heavy dog. If joints are the goal, ask about omega-3s and read our senior dog joint guide.

FAQ

Olive oil for dogs FAQ

Can a little olive oil be part of a healthy dog diet?

Plain olive oil is safe for most healthy dogs in small amounts, but it is mostly calories. It supplies oleic acid, an omega-9 fat, not the omega-3s with joint evidence. Its main effect on a dog's diet is extra fat, so measure it and count it.

How many calories are in a tablespoon of olive oil for a dog?

About 119 calories, based on USDA data of 884 kcal per 100 g and 13.5 g per tablespoon. That is more than twice the daily treat budget of a 22 lb dog, so a tablespoon is a lot of fat for most dogs.

Can olive oil give my dog diarrhea?

Yes. More fat than a dog is used to can cause loose stools or diarrhea. Vomiting or belly pain after a fatty food can signal pancreatitis, which needs a vet. Dogs on a low-fat diet should not get added oil without their vet's approval.

Does Mighty K9 add calories to my dog's diet?

Yes. Each 2 mL serving of Mighty K9 adds 16.2 calories from olive oil. That is about 5% of daily calories for a 10 lb dog and well under 2% for a 50 lb dog. Count it as a treat and trim another extra if needed.

Can olive oil replace fish oil for my dog's joints?

No. Olive oil is mostly omega-9 oleic acid and has no joint studies in dogs. Fish oil supplies EPA and DHA, the omega-3s that eased arthritis pain in a 2022 review of trials. Your vet can suggest a product and amount.

Which dogs should not have olive oil?

Dogs with a history of pancreatitis, dogs on a low-fat or weight-loss diet, and dogs with a sensitive stomach should only get added oil if their vet agrees. Miniature Schnauzers are overrepresented in pancreatitis cases, so extra care makes sense for them.
