The molecule
What is ESS60 (C60)?
C60 is a molecule made of 60 carbon atoms joined into a hollow ball, a shape chemists call a fullerene. It looks like a tiny soccer ball. ESS60 is a trademarked C60 ingredient sold already dissolved in olive oil.
C60 does not mix with water, but it does dissolve in oil. That is why every C60 product, Mighty K9 included, comes as an oil. The olive oil in the bottle is the carrier, and the C60 rides along in it.
The front panel says "Contains 100% ESS60." The label does not explain that phrase. The Guaranteed Analysis gives the number that counts: 1.6 mg of ESS60 per 2 mL serving, marked with an asterisk because it is not an essential dog nutrient (AAFCO, Model regulations).
| Label name | ESS60 |
|---|---|
| What it is | Carbon 60 fullerene, a ball-shaped carbon molecule |
| Type | Trademarked C60 ingredient |
| Position on the label | 2 of 3 (ingredients are listed by weight) |
| Amount per 2 mL serving | 1.6 mg per 2 mL serving (label) |
| What research shows | Rodent studies only; no published dog studies found |
| Strength of evidence in dogs | No dog studies |
| Why it is in the bottle | Sold as an antioxidant for healthy aging |
| Main caution | Light-exposed C60 oil turned toxic in a 2021 mouse study. Keep the bottle out of light. |
By the numbers
How much ESS60 is in Mighty K9?
The 48 mg figure is simple math: 1.6 mg times 30 servings. The rest of each serving is olive oil.
Research timeline
What does the research on C60 show?
The research is small and comes only from rats and mice. One tiny 2012 study made headlines, and a larger 2021 study did not repeat its result.
| Year and study | Animals | What was tested | What it found |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2012, Baati (Baati 2012, rats) | 18 rats (3 groups of 6) | Water, olive oil, or C60 in olive oil at 1.7 mg/kg | Median lifespan 42 months with C60, vs 26 (olive oil) and 22 (water). The authors called it exploratory. |
| 2021, Grohn (Grohn 2021, mice) | Mice | C60 in olive oil, including commercial products | No lifespan or healthspan benefit (median 145 vs 144 weeks). Oil left in bright light for 4-8 days killed about 25-50% of dosed mice within 14 days. Some products were off their label strength by more than 18%. |
| 2024, Burres (Burres 2024, rat safety) | Rats | 3.8 mg/kg a day for 14 days | No treatment-related harm. Funded by a company that sells C60 oil. |
| 2024 review (Ozdemir 2024, review) | None (review) | Published C60 research | Evidence mostly from animal and lab work; no long-term human safety research found. |
| 2026 PubMed search (PubMed search, C60 in dogs) | Dogs | Clinical trials of C60 in dogs | None found |
The Grohn team also noted that people give C60 products to their pets. That makes the light finding and the label-strength finding worth knowing for dog owners. Nothing in these studies tested Mighty K9 itself.
Evidence ladder
How strong is the evidence for ESS60 in dogs?
Higher rungs mean stronger kinds of evidence. Watch where C60 stops.
- 4Controlled dog trials and reviews
- 3Studies in dogs
- 2Rodent studies
- 1Lab and test-tube studies
- C60 (ESS60)Rodent data only, and mixed(Baati 2012, rats) (Grohn 2021, mice) (PubMed search, C60 in dogs)
- Omega-3 (EPA/DHA) for dog joint painReviews of dog trials show pain relief(Barbeau-Gregoire 2022, meta-analysis) (AAHA, Pain guidelines 2022)
- Glucosamine and chondroitin for dog joint painTested in dogs; no pain relief shown(Barbeau-Gregoire 2022, meta-analysis)
- Olive oil for dog jointsNo joint studies found(USDA, Olive oil)
Higher means stronger kinds of evidence, not better results: glucosamine reached the top rung and still showed no pain relief. No published trial of C60 in dogs turned up in a PubMed search on October 11, 2026.
C60 sits on the rodent rung. Omega-3 has climbed to reviews of dog trials. That gap is the main thing to understand before you buy. The brand's benefit claims, card by card, are on the claims and evidence page.
Dose for scale
How does the Mighty K9 dose compare with the rat studies?
The serving is small next to the rat doses. A 50 lb dog (about 23 kg) gets roughly 0.07 mg per kilogram, about 4% of the 2012 rat dose per kilo.
| Dog weight | ESS60 per kg | Share of 1.7 mg/kg | Share of 3.8 mg/kg |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 lb (4.5 kg) | about 0.35 mg/kg | about 21% | about 9% |
| 25 lb (11.3 kg) | about 0.14 mg/kg | about 8% | about 4% |
| 50 lb (22.7 kg) | about 0.07 mg/kg | about 4% | about 2% |
| 90 lb (40.8 kg) | about 0.04 mg/kg | about 2% | about 1% |
Rats are not dogs, and doses do not scale neatly between species. The table shows size only, not safety or effect. The label lists the same 2 mL for every dog; ask your vet about small dogs.

Why are animal studies not enough to prove C60 works?
The Federal Trade Commission says health claims need competent and reliable scientific evidence, generally controlled trials in the target group. Animal and lab studies, or testimonials, are not enough on their own (FTC, Health claims).
For a dog product, that means studies in dogs. None exist for C60. So any claim that ESS60 supports a dog's joints or aging rests on rodent data and on hope.
Not proven is not the same as proven useless. It means nobody has measured it in dogs. Your own notes during the 30-day money-back window are the only test you will get.

Storage
Why must ESS60 be kept away from light?
In the 2021 mouse study, C60 oil left in bright light for a few days became toxic. About 25-50% of the mice dosed with it died within 14 days, and the authors tied the harm to light (Grohn 2021, mice).
No storage line appears on the Mighty K9 label images. The amber glass blocks some light, but not all of it. Light also breaks down olive oil itself (IOC, Olive oil storage).
- Keep the cap tight after every serving.
- Store the bottle in a closed cupboard, never on a sunny counter or windowsill.
- Keep it away from the stove and other heat.
- Do not pour the oil into a clear container.
Other cautions, including fat and pancreatitis, are on the side effects page.

What else is in Mighty K9 besides ESS60?
ESS60 is ingredient two of three. Olive oil carries it and supplies the calories, and bacon flavor adds taste. Compare them on the ingredients overview.
FAQ
ESS60 (C60) in Mighty K9: FAQ
How much C60 is in one serving of Mighty K9?
Each 2 mL serving of Mighty K9 contains 1.6 mg of ESS60, according to the Guaranteed Analysis. A 60 mL bottle holds 30 servings, or 48 mg in total. By weight, that is about 0.09% of each serving; the rest is olive oil and bacon flavor.
Is C60 safe for dogs?
Nobody knows for sure, because no study has tested C60 in dogs. A 14-day rat study found no harm, but it was funded by a C60 seller. A 2021 mouse study found light-exposed C60 oil was toxic, so storage in the dark matters. Ask your vet before starting.
What is ESS60 made of?
ESS60 is a trademarked ingredient made of C60, a hollow ball of 60 carbon atoms, dissolved in olive oil. In Mighty K9 it is listed second on the label, after extra virgin olive oil and before bacon flavor.
Does C60 make dogs live longer?
There is no evidence that it does. One 2012 study of 18 rats reported longer lives, but the authors called it exploratory. A larger 2021 mouse study found no lifespan or healthspan benefit, and no study has looked at dogs.
Is ESS60 the same as regular C60 oil?
ESS60 is a brand name for C60 dissolved in olive oil, so the molecule is the same. What can differ between products is purity, strength and storage. A 2021 study found some C60 products bought online were off their label strength by more than 18%.
Why do C60 products come in olive oil?
C60 does not dissolve in water, but it does dissolve in oils such as olive oil. The oil works as the carrier. In Mighty K9, that olive oil makes up nearly the whole 2 mL serving and supplies its 16.2 calories.
Has ESS60 been tested in dogs?
No. A PubMed search on October 11, 2026, found no clinical trial of C60 in dogs, and Mighty K9 itself has no published study. All C60 research so far comes from rats, mice and lab work.
