Olive Oil in Mighty K9: Nutrition, Calories and Safety
Extra virgin olive oil is the first and largest ingredient in Mighty K9, at about 1.8 g of every 2 mL serving. It supplies the 16.2 calories per serving and is mostly oleic acid, an omega-9 fat. It is not a source of the EPA and DHA omega-3s from fish oil, and dogs prone to pancreatitis need a vet's okay first.

What does olive oil do in Mighty K9?
Olive oil is the base of Mighty K9: it carries the ESS60 and makes up nearly the whole serving. C60 dissolves in oil, so the oil is how the ingredient gets into the bowl.
It is listed first because ingredients go in order of weight (AAFCO, Reading labels). In a 2 mL serving, that means about 1.8 g of oil.
The oil also brings the calories. Every one of the 16.2 kcal printed on the label can be explained by olive oil alone. The full label math is on the Guaranteed Analysis page.
| Label name | Extra Virgin Olive Oil |
|---|---|
| What it is | Olea europaea fruit oil |
| Type | Plant oil (the carrier and nearly all of the serving) |
| Position on the label | 1 of 3 (ingredients are listed by weight) |
| Amount per 2 mL serving | Nearly all of the 2 mL (about 1.8 g) |
| What research shows | About 16 kcal per 2 mL; mostly oleic acid, an omega-9 fat |
| Strength of evidence in dogs | A food fat, not a joint treatment |
| Why it is in the bottle | Carries the ESS60 and supplies the calories |
| Main caution | It is pure fat. Dogs with a history of pancreatitis or on a low-fat diet need their vet's okay first. |
Nutrition
What is the nutrition of olive oil per serving?
USDA lists olive oil at 884 kcal per 100 g, and about 0.91 g per mL (USDA, Olive oil). Scale that down to 2 mL and you get the label's numbers almost exactly.
| Amount | Weight | Calories | Monounsaturated fat | Oleic acid (omega-9) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 100 g (USDA reference) | 100 g | 884 kcal | 73 g | 71.3 g |
| 1 tablespoon | 13.5 g | about 119 kcal | about 9.9 g | about 9.6 g |
| One 2 mL serving | about 1.8 g | about 16 kcal (label: 16.2) | about 1.3 g | about 1.3 g |
| One 60 mL bottle | about 55 g | about 483 kcal (label: 486) | about 40 g | about 39 g |
Olive oil has no protein, no fiber and no carbohydrate. That matches the label's crude protein and fiber of 0%. It is pure fat, and the main fat is oleic acid.
Omega-9 vs omega-3
Is olive oil the same as omega-3 fish oil for dogs?
No. Olive oil is mostly oleic acid, an omega-9 fat, while fish oil supplies the omega-3s EPA and DHA. They are different fats with different evidence behind them.
Oleic acid (omega-9)
About 71% of olive oil by weight (USDA, Olive oil). A normal food fat. We found no study of olive oil for dog joints.
EPA and DHA (omega-3)
Omega-3 products eased arthritis pain in a 2022 review of trials (Barbeau-Gregoire 2022, meta-analysis). Merck cites EPA at 50-100 mg per kg a day for better mobility (Merck Vet Manual, Osteoarthritis).
Omega-9 is not a stand-in for the omega-3 dose a vet may suggest. If your dog already takes fish oil, ask your vet whether adding more oil makes sense.
Calories
How many calories does the olive oil add to my dog's diet?
One serving adds 16.2 kcal a day, and a bottle adds 486 kcal over a month. For a 50 lb dog, one serving is well under 2% of the day's calories. For a 10 lb dog, it is about 5%, which is half of a normal treat budget. Vets suggest keeping all extras under 10% of daily calories (WSAVA, Treats).
On a small dog, swap out a treat to make room. The serving size by weight page has a table for every size band.
Fat caution
Can olive oil cause pancreatitis in dogs?
Any added fat can be a problem for a dog prone to pancreatitis. A high-fat diet is a major cause, and one large fatty helping can trigger an attack or a relapse (AKC, Pancreatitis).
The Merck Veterinary Manual names eating something unusual as a common risk factor and notes that Miniature Schnauzers are overrepresented (Merck Vet Manual, Pancreatitis). Signs include vomiting, belly pain and diarrhea. A low-fat diet is a key part of treatment.
A 2 mL serving is a small amount of fat, but it is pure fat. Dogs with a pancreatitis history, or on a low-fat or weight-loss diet, need their vet's okay before starting. Vomiting or belly pain after a new food is a reason to call the vet.

Order nowEvery day
Can dogs eat olive oil every day?
Olive oil is a common food fat, and a small daily amount fits into many dogs' diets. The real limits are calories and fat tolerance, not the oil itself.
- Count it as part of the 10% extras budget, like a treat.
- Give it with a meal, not on an empty stomach, to keep it gentle.
- Stick to the label's one serving a day. More oil means more calories, not more benefit.
- Watch the first week for loose stool, and cut back or stop if it happens.
Weight matters for older joints. Most dogs seen by vets are already overweight (APOP, 2022 survey). Read more in olive oil for dogs: how much is safe.
Storage
How should I store an olive oil supplement?
Keep the bottle closed, in a dark cupboard, away from the stove and sunny windows. The International Olive Council calls light the main threat to olive oil (IOC, Olive oil storage).
The council suggests storing it at about 55-77 degrees F, tightly closed, and using it within about 1-3 months of opening. A Mighty K9 bottle lasts 30 days at one serving a day, so it fits that window. Light matters twice here: in a 2021 mouse study, C60 oil left in bright light turned toxic (Grohn 2021, mice).
Close it after every use
Air speeds up spoilage. Wipe the dropper and screw it back on.
Keep it in the dark
Amber glass helps, but a cupboard helps more.
Smell it now and then
If it smells stale or off, do not use it.

Organic claim
Is the olive oil in Mighty K9 certified organic?
The front panel says "Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil," but no organic certifier is named on the label images. The ingredient line reads only "Extra Virgin Olive Oil."
The claim may be true, but you cannot check it from the label. If organic sourcing matters to you, call +1 (302) 200-3480 and ask which agency certifies the oil. A real answer names a body you can look up.

FAQ
Olive oil in Mighty K9: FAQ
Is olive oil good for dogs?
Olive oil is a safe food fat for most healthy dogs in small amounts. It is mostly oleic acid, an omega-9 fat, and adds calories. It has not been studied for dog joints, and dogs with a pancreatitis history or a low-fat diet should skip it unless their vet agrees.
How many calories are in one serving of Mighty K9?
One 2 mL serving of Mighty K9 has 16.2 kcal, according to the label, and a full 60 mL bottle has 486 kcal. Nearly all of it comes from the olive oil. That is about 5% of daily calories for a 10 lb dog and under 2% for a 50 lb dog.
Does olive oil give dogs omega-3?
Not in a useful way. Olive oil is mostly oleic acid, an omega-9 fat, and contains no EPA or DHA, the omega-3s from fish oil that have dog arthritis evidence. If your vet wants your dog on omega-3, Mighty K9 does not fill that role.
Can olive oil upset a dog's stomach?
Yes, extra fat can cause loose stool in some dogs, especially at first. Give the serving with a meal and watch the first week. Vomiting or belly pain is different: it can point to pancreatitis, so call your vet if you see it.
At what amount does olive oil become too much for a dog?
There is no single limit, because it depends on the dog's size, diet and health. A useful rule is to keep all extras, oil included, under 10% of daily calories. Mighty K9's label serving is 2 mL, or 16.2 kcal, once a day.
Does olive oil in a supplement go bad?
Yes, olive oil can go rancid, especially with light, heat and air. Keep the bottle closed in a dark cupboard and use it within a few months of opening. One Mighty K9 bottle lasts 30 days, so it is normally finished well before then.
For dogs, is extra virgin olive oil better than regular olive oil?
Extra virgin oil is less processed, but no study shows dogs do better on it than on regular olive oil. Both have about the same calories and fat. Serving size and fat tolerance matter more.
