Storage

Storing Oil Supplements for Dogs: Light, Heat, Shelf Life and Your Mighty K9 Bottle

Quick answer

Keep oil supplements closed, in a dark cupboard, at room temperature. The International Olive Council names light as the main threat to olive oil and suggests 55-77 F and using an opened bottle within about 1-3 months. For C60 oil, light matters even more: in a 2021 mouse study, light-exposed oil turned toxic. A Mighty K9 bottle lasts 30 days at one serving a day.

A pretty photo spot is not a storage spot. Back in a dark cupboard, the oil keeps far better than in sunlight.

The main threat

What damages an olive oil supplement fastest?

Light. The International Olive Council calls light the main threat to olive oil, ahead of heat and air (IOC, Olive oil storage).

Its storage advice is short: keep the oil in the dark, at 13-25 C (about 55-77 F), tightly closed and away from heat. Once a bottle is open, use it within about 1-3 months (IOC, Olive oil storage).

Mighty K9 is nearly all olive oil, so the same rules apply. The label images show no storage line, which makes it worth setting up good habits on day one. The olive oil page covers what is in the oil itself.

C60 and light

Why does light matter more for C60 oil?

Because light can turn C60 in olive oil toxic. In a 2021 study, C60 oil left in bright light for 4-8 days killed about 25-50% of the mice dosed with it within 14 days (Grohn 2021, mice).

The authors described the toxicity as light-dependent. The study was in mice, not dogs, and the light was bright and constant. Still, it is the clearest reason to keep a C60 product out of the sun. The same study found no lifespan benefit from C60, which our post on C60 research covers in full.

Do not use a sun-baked bottle

If your bottle sat in sunlight for days, on a windowsill or in a car, do not give it to your dog. Set it aside and call the order desk.

Where to keep it

Where should you store Mighty K9 at home?

A closed kitchen cupboard away from the stove is the best spot in most homes. It is dark, near the dog food and stays at room temperature.

Common storage spots for an oil supplement, judged against International Olive Council advice: dark, 55-77 F, tightly closed, away from heat (IOC, Olive oil storage).

Wherever it goes, keep it out of reach of children and other pets, as the product page warns.

The bottle

Does Mighty K9's amber glass bottle protect the oil?

Tap a number to read each part of the bottle.

Tap a number to read that part of the bottle.

  1. Dropper

Black rubber bulb and glass dropper. The brand's serving calculator counts one full dropper as 1 mL.

  2. Amber glass

Dark amber glass, a common choice for light-sensitive oils. Still keep it in a cupboard: light is the main threat to olive oil.

  3. Wordmark

MIGHTY K9, Canine Supplements. Same wordmark as the Guaranteed Analysis panel.

  4. Label art

A spaniel resting its chin. Decoration, not a claim.

  5. Organic olive oil

The front says Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil. The ingredient line says Extra Virgin Olive Oil and names no organic certifier.

  6. 100% ESS60

Front-panel wording. The Guaranteed Analysis gives the amount: 1.6 mg ESS60 per 2 mL serving.

  7. Bacon flavor

The taste ingredient. Its source is not listed.

  8. Net contents

2 fl oz (60 mL): 30 servings of 2 mL. The label prints NET WT, though fluid ounces measure volume.

Amber glass filters out much of the light that harms oil, which is why it is a common choice for oils. It helps, but it is not a vault. A dark cupboard still does most of the work, and the cap needs to go back on tight after each use.

Shelf life

How long does an opened bottle of Mighty K9 last?

About 30 days, which fits well inside the 1-3 month window the IOC suggests for opened olive oil (IOC, Olive oil storage). One 60 mL bottle holds 30 servings of 2 mL, so one serving a day empties it in a month.

Open one bottle at a time

If you bought a 3- or 6-bottle pack, leave the spares sealed in the cupboard. Write the opening date on the label of each bottle you start.

A best-by date may be printed on the bottle base, though the supplied images do not show one. Check yours when it arrives. For the daily routine, see how to use Mighty K9.

Spoilage

How can you tell if an oil supplement has gone bad?

Smell it. Fresh olive oil smells green or fruity; old oil can smell stale, waxy or like crayons, which is a sign of rancidity.

  • A sharp, stale or paint-like smell under the bacon flavor.
  • A clear change in color or clarity compared with when you opened it.
  • A bottle that sat in light or heat, even if it smells fine.
  • A date on the base that has passed.

Some dogs refuse food with rancid oil on it. If yours suddenly turns away, check the bottle before blaming the dog. Stomach upset and other reactions are covered on the side effects page.

On the road

How do you travel with an oil supplement for your dog?

Pack it in your bag, not the car's hot trunk. Wrap the bottle in a sock or cloth to block light and cushion the glass, and keep it upright in a zip bag in case the dropper leaks.

Never leave the bottle in a parked car on a warm day. If you are away for a few days, a dark drawer in the hotel room works fine. Bring a small cup if your dog eats from a travel bowl, so you can mix the 2 mL in properly.

Old or damaged bottle

What should you do with an old or light-damaged bottle?

Stop using it and keep it until you have the lot number. That number is what FDA asks for in a complaint (FDA, Report a complaint).

  1. Note the codes

Write down the lot number and best-by date from the base. The batch page explains the seller's codes.

  2. Call the order desk

Ring +1 (302) 200-3480 with your order ID. Inside 30 days, the guarantee covers empty bottles too.

  3. Report a reaction

If your dog got sick, call your vet and file with FDA's Safety Reporting Portal, adding the lot number and vet records.

FAQ

Oil supplement storage FAQ

What is the best place to store a Mighty K9 bottle?

Keep the bottle tightly closed in a dark cupboard at room temperature, away from the stove and sunny windows. The label images print no storage line, so follow olive oil advice: dark, about 55-77 F, and finish an opened bottle within a few months.

Should I keep my dog's olive oil supplement in the fridge?

No storage instruction appears on the label images, and olive oil keeps well in a dark cupboard at room temperature. The cold can make olive oil cloudy. If you are unsure, ask the order desk what the brand advises.

Does sunlight ruin C60 oil?

It can. In a 2021 mouse study, C60 oil left in bright light for 4-8 days killed about 25-50% of the mice dosed with it within 14 days. Keep any C60 product in the dark and do not use a bottle that sat in the sun.

How long does olive oil last after opening?

The International Olive Council suggests using opened olive oil within about 1-3 months, stored dark, cool and tightly closed. A Mighty K9 bottle runs out in 30 days at one 2 mL serving a day.

How do I know if my dog's oil supplement is rancid?

Smell it. Rancid oil smells stale, waxy or like crayons instead of fresh and fruity. A change in color or a bottle that sat in heat or light are other warning signs. When in doubt, do not use it.

Can I keep Mighty K9 in the car?

No. Cars heat up fast, and windows let in light, both of which damage olive oil. Carry the bottle in your bag when you travel, wrapped in cloth, and keep it out of a parked car.

Where do I find the lot number on my Mighty K9 bottle?

Lot and best-by details may be printed on the bottle base, though the supplied product images do not show them. Keep the bottle until you have the number, because FDA asks for it in any complaint.
