C60 for Dogs: What the Research Shows, Study by Study

Quick answer

C60 has never been tested in a published dog trial. Its fame comes from a 2012 study of 18 rats that lived longer on C60 in olive oil. A larger 2021 mouse study found no lifespan benefit, and light-exposed C60 oil turned toxic. A 2024 rat safety study ran just 14 days and was seller-funded.

The basics

What is C60, and why is it in dog supplements?

C60 is a molecule made of 60 carbon atoms joined into a hollow ball, a bit like a soccer ball. Chemists call this family of molecules fullerenes.

C60 does not dissolve in water, so sellers dissolve it in oil. Mighty K9 uses ESS60, a trademarked C60 ingredient in olive oil, at 1.6 mg per 2 mL serving. Sellers pitch C60 as an antioxidant for healthy aging. Those words come from marketing, not from a study in dogs.

To judge the pitch, you need the studies behind it. There are only a handful, and none of them involve dogs.

2012

What did the 2012 C60 rat study find?

The 2012 study gave 18 rats water, olive oil or C60 in olive oil, six rats per group (Baati 2012, rats). The C60 dose was 1.7 mg per kg of body weight. The median lifespan was 42 months on C60, 26 months on olive oil and 22 months on water.

Those numbers spread fast. A near doubling of lifespan is the kind of headline that sells products. Online forums and C60 sellers still quote it today.

Why the result is fragile

Six rats per group is very small. One or two unusual animals can swing a median. The authors themselves called the work exploratory, meaning it raised a question rather than answered it.

A finding like that needs to be repeated by another team before anyone relies on it. That happened nine years later.

2021

Did later studies confirm that C60 extends life?

No. A 2021 study in mice, much larger than the rat study, found no gain in lifespan or healthspan from C60 in olive oil (Grohn 2021, mice). The median lifespan was 145 weeks with C60 and 144 weeks without it.

The same team found two more problems:

  • Light made it toxic. C60 oil left in bright light for 4 to 8 days killed about 25-50% of dosed mice within 14 days.
  • Labels were off. Commercial C60 products they tested varied, and some missed their label strength by more than 18%.

The authors also noted that people give C60 to their pets. That makes the light result directly relevant to dog owners.

Keep C60 oil in the dark

Store any C60 product closed, in a dark cupboard and away from heat. Do not leave it on a sunny counter. Our post on storing oil supplements has the details.

2024

What do the 2024 C60 studies say?

Two papers from 2024 added a little, but not much.

A 14-day rat safety study

Rats got C60 in extra virgin olive oil at 3.8 mg per kg a day for 14 days, with no treatment-related harm seen (Burres 2024, rat safety). That is useful, but two weeks is short. The study was funded by a company that sells C60 oil, and it reports no dog or human trials.

A review of C60 and health

A 2024 review looked at C60 in olive oil and human health (Ozdemir 2024, review). It found the evidence comes mainly from animal and lab studies. It found no research on long-term safety in people and called for larger trials and standard doses.

Neither paper tested a dog, and neither looked at joints or movement.

Dogs

Has C60 been tested in dogs?

Not in any published trial we could find. A PubMed search on October 11, 2026, for fullerene or C60 in dogs, filtered to clinical trials, returned no results (PubMed search, C60 in dogs).

Higher means stronger kinds of evidence, not better results: glucosamine reached the top rung and still showed no pain relief. No published trial of C60 in dogs turned up in a PubMed search on October 11, 2026.

For scale, a 2 mL serving of Mighty K9 gives a 50 lb (23 kg) dog about 0.07 mg of C60 per kg. That is roughly 4% of the 2012 rat dose per kilo. Rats are not dogs, and doses do not translate neatly between species. The math only shows that the serving is small and untested.

What it means

What does the C60 research mean for dog owners?

It means C60 is an open question, not a proven joint or aging aid. Under FTC guidance, health claims need competent and reliable evidence, generally randomized controlled trials; animal studies alone are not enough (FTC, Health claims).

Mighty K9 is the product this site sells, so here is our plain view. Its label is short and its 2 mL serving is easy to give. It also carries 16.2 calories of olive oil. But nobody has measured what its C60 does in a dog. If you try it, treat it as an experiment, track your dog and use the 30-day guarantee. Read more on the ESS60 ingredient page and the claims and evidence page.

For sore joints, the proven steps come first: weight, exercise and vet care. See our senior dog joint guide.

Ask first

What should I ask before giving my dog C60?

  1. Ask your vet

Does my dog have any reason to avoid an oil add-on, such as past pancreatitis or a low-fat diet (Merck Vet Manual, Pancreatitis)? Will it interact with current medicines (Tufts Petfoodology, Sensible use)?

  2. Ask the seller

Is there a lab report for this lot? How was the oil protected from light?

  3. Ask yourself

What will I track, and how will I know if anything changed? Write down a baseline on day 1.

Problems with any pet product can be reported to FDA with the lot number and vet records (FDA, Report a complaint).

FAQ

C60 for dogs FAQ

Has anyone tested C60 safety in dogs?

No one knows for sure, because C60 has not been tested in a published dog trial. A 14-day rat study found no harm, but it was short and seller-funded. A 2021 mouse study found light-exposed C60 oil was toxic, so storage matters. Ask your vet first.

Did C60 extend life in any animal study?

There is no evidence that it does. The longer-life claim comes from a 2012 study of 18 rats. A larger 2021 mouse study found no lifespan or healthspan benefit. No study has measured lifespan in dogs given C60.

Why did the 2012 C60 rat study go viral?

It reported rats on C60 in olive oil living a median 42 months, versus 26 on olive oil alone. That near doubling made a striking headline. Few readers noticed there were only six rats per group and the authors called it exploratory.

Can light make C60 oil toxic?

In a 2021 mouse study, C60 oil left in bright light for 4 to 8 days killed about 25-50% of dosed mice within 14 days. Keep any C60 product closed, in a dark cupboard and away from heat.

How much C60 is in a Mighty K9 serving?

The Mighty K9 label lists 1.6 mg of ESS60 (C60) per 2 mL serving, or 48 mg per 60 mL bottle. For a 50 lb dog, that is about 0.07 mg per kg, roughly 4% of the 2012 rat dose per kilo.

Is there any research on C60 for dog joints?

No. None of the C60 studies looked at joints or movement, and none used dogs. A PubMed search in October 2026 found no clinical trial of C60 in dogs. Omega-3 fatty acids are the supplement with dog joint evidence.
