Keeping an Older Dog Moving: Weight, Exercise and Where Mighty K9 Fits
For an older dog, a lean body weight does more for stiff joints than any supplement. Vets call a slender weight the most critical part of arthritis care, and 59% of dogs seen in 2022 were overweight. Pair steady, low-impact exercise your vet approves with grippy floors at home, and count every extra calorie, including the 16.2 kcal in a Mighty K9 serving.

Weight first
Why does weight matter so much for an older dog's joints?
Every extra pound loads hips, knees and elbows with every step. The American College of Veterinary Surgeons calls a slender body weight the most critical part of caring for a dog with osteoarthritis (ACVS, Osteoarthritis).
The best-known evidence comes from a Purina study of 48 Labradors. Dogs fed 25% less than their littermates lived a median 13 years instead of 11.2, and showed signs of aging such as impaired gait later (Purina, Life Span Study). Purina ran the study, so keep that in mind, but the result fits what vets see every day.
Extra weight is the norm, not the exception. In a 2022 survey, vet teams rated 59% of dogs as overweight or obese (APOP, 2022 survey).
At home
How can you tell if your older dog needs to lose weight?
Ask your vet for a weight and a body condition score at the next visit, then check at home between visits. A scale reading on its own tells you less than how your dog looks and feels.
- Can you feel the ribs under a thin layer, without pressing hard?
- From above, is there a waist behind the ribs?
- From the side, does the belly tuck up toward the back legs?
- Has your dog started to lag on walks or skip the sofa?
The last point can also be pain, not just pounds. Owners often mistake joint pain for normal aging (AAHA, Senior care 2023). Our guide to signs of joint pain in dogs lists what to watch for.
Calorie basics
How many calories does an older dog need a day?
Slide to your dog's weight for a starting estimate.
Vets start from the resting energy requirement: 70 times body weight in kilograms to the 0.75 power. A neutered adult needs about 1.4 to 1.6 times that; an inactive or weight-prone dog about 1.0 to 1.2 times (AAHA, Energy needs). Many seniors belong in the lower group.

Estimate only: resting energy = 70 x (weight in kg)0.75, times the life-stage factor (AAHA, Energy needs). Extras and treats should stay under 10% of daily calories (WSAVA, Treats). Your vet can give your dog's real number.
Treat it as a first guess, and let the scale and your vet guide changes.
Extras
Where do treats and Mighty K9's calories fit?
Treats and extras should stay under 10% of daily calories. That is about 47 kcal for a 10 kg (22 lb) dog, 79 kcal for 20 kg and 108 kcal for 30 kg (WSAVA, Treats).
One 2 mL serving of Mighty K9 is pure olive oil with 16.2 kcal. For a 10 lb dog, that is about 5% of the day's calories, half the treat budget. For a 50 lb dog, it is well under 2%. If your small dog gets the drops, trim a treat or a few pieces of kibble to make room. The serving size by weight page shows the math by size.
Dogs with a pancreatitis history or on a low-fat diet need their vet's okay before any added oil (AKC, Pancreatitis). More on safe amounts in our post on olive oil for dogs.
Sample week
What does a week of low-impact exercise look like for a senior dog?
Steady, controlled activity on most days beats one long weekend outing. ACVS lists controlled leash walks and physical rehab, including water work, as core parts of arthritis care (ACVS, Osteoarthritis). Use the plan below as ideas to clear with your vet, not a prescription.
| Day | Main activity | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | Two short leash walks on flat ground | Steady, even loading |
| Tuesday | Leash walks plus sniff time on grass | Slow pace, mental work |
| Wednesday | Swimming or water therapy, if your vet agrees | Moves joints with less weight on them |
| Thursday | Leash walks with a gentle slope | Builds rear leg muscle |
| Friday | Two short leash walks | Keeps the routine steady |
| Saturday | A slightly longer walk on soft ground | Stamina without jumping or sprinting |
| Sunday | Easy day: short strolls and rest | Recovery |
Skip ball chasing, sharp turns and jumping from heights. If your dog is sore the next day, the last outing was too much.

How can you make your home safer for a stiff older dog?
Start with the floors. The 2023 AAHA senior care guidelines suggest rugs on slick floors, ramps and supportive beds as part of pain care for older dogs (AAHA, Senior care 2023).
Grip underfoot
Runners or yoga mats on tile and wood, along the paths your dog uses most.
Ramps and steps
A ramp to the car or a step to the sofa saves joints from hard landings.
A firm bed
A supportive bed in a warm spot makes getting up easier.
Film your dog rising and climbing stairs once a month. AAHA notes owner videos help vets judge pain (AAHA, Senior care 2023). The senior dog joint guide covers the rest.
The supplement
Can Mighty K9 replace weight control and exercise?
No. Mighty K9 is olive oil with 1.6 mg of ESS60 (C60) per serving, sold for senior-dog joint comfort, and no published study has tested C60 in dogs (PubMed search, C60 in dogs). AAHA puts weight control, exercise and rehab near the top of dog arthritis care (AAHA, Pain guidelines 2022).
If you add it, give 2 mL with one meal a day, as the how to use page explains, and count its 16.2 kcal like a treat.

FAQ
Older dog weight and exercise FAQ
How much exercise does an older dog need?
Most seniors do best with short, steady leash walks on most days rather than one long outing. The right amount depends on your dog's joints, heart and weight, so ask your vet. If your dog is stiff or sore the next day, cut back.
Is swimming good for older dogs with stiff joints?
It can be. Water supports body weight, so joints move with less load, and vet surgeons list water work as part of arthritis rehab. Ask your vet first, use a dog life jacket, and keep sessions short so your dog does not get tired in the water.
How do I help my senior dog lose weight?
Ask your vet for a target weight and daily calories, then measure every meal. Cut treats to under 10% of the day's calories and add gentle daily walks. Weigh your dog every two to four weeks so you can adjust.
How many calories should a senior dog eat?
Start with 70 times weight in kg to the 0.75 power, then multiply. Neutered adults need about 1.4 to 1.6 times that number; inactive dogs about 1.0 to 1.2 times. Your vet can fine-tune it.
Should I count Mighty K9 calories if my senior dog is dieting?
Yes. Each 2 mL serving is pure olive oil with 16.2 kcal. That is about 5% of a 10 lb dog's daily calories and under 2% for a 50 lb dog. Trim a treat to make room if your dog is small or dieting.
Should I walk my dog if it is limping?
Not before a vet visit. Limping, trouble rising or a dog who stops jumping can be signs of osteoarthritis, which is painful and treatable. Your vet can tell you what activity is safe while your dog is checked.
What flooring is best for old dogs?
Grippy surfaces. Rugs, runners or rubber mats on tile and wood help older dogs stand up and walk without slipping. Senior care guidelines also suggest ramps and supportive beds.
